An Interview With President Aw Chye Wee
Aw Chye Wee joined Ee Hoe Hean Club 11 years ago and served firstly as Director (External Affairs) and then as Vice President for two consecutive terms. In July this year, a new Board of Directors was elected and Chye Wee was unanimously elected as the new President. During an interview with Yihe Shiji, President Aw made the following comments:
“I am grateful for the support given to me by the members and am also grateful to my predecessors for their contributions to the Club. I am aware that as President my responsibilities will be heavy.
“I will consult my colleagues, to build consensus, and implement all measures collectively as a board. I sincerely look forward to receiving full support from the board and all members.
“Our club is an esteemed venue for networking among members. Our members are successful entrepreneurs and professionals in their individual fields and are also serving the public good under respective capacities. I hope our members will use this platform to share their experiences in their workplace and in serving society.
“Once the pandemic situation has stabilized, we will restore our regular dinner parties, and members will have more opportunities to interact.
“Our club has held various forums in the past, which have been warmly welcomed by club members and members of the public.
The board will soon deliberate on how we can resume activities under the new normal.
“The Pioneer Memorial Hall on the first floor of Ee Hoe Hean was established and maintained by the Tan Kah Kee Foundation. It aims to commemorate our pioneers for their contributions to the nation and the country. It is a good place for young students to learn. We look forward to the continued operation and upgrading of the Hall by TKK Foundation and would encourage Club members to make full use of the Hall.
“In 2009, the Club initiated the Chinese Book Prize for students from the SAP schools for a 10-year term. Although the term has expired, the Club continued to make awards this year. The Board will review the matter in due course.
“In this rapidly evolving world, societies and associations must keep pace with the times or else risk being rendered irrelevant. Our Club is no exception. Our policies and activities need to be constantly fine-tuned and the Board will be receptive to the opinions of members.
Yihe ShiJi is the medium with which the Club connects itself with the Chinese community during past years. It is a well-reputed comprehensive journal with a special focus on humanities and historical studies. The journal has been published for ten years and is a contribution by the Club to the larger society. Under this premise, the Board has decided to resume publication.
While maintaining its original style Yihe ShiJi will now feature more studies relating to communal activities, livelihood issues, various industries, and trades, as well as the latest technological developments. More articles will be translated and published in English. The electronic version will soon be launched.”
